Road safety and your mobile phone

Your mobile phone and vehicle are the main pieces of equipment used to provide delivery services for any food delivery platforms. As a rider, you use your mobile phone to accept offers of work and complete deliveries, and potentially for navigation on the roads.

This means you should be familiar with the rules on using your mobile phone while on the road.

It is illegal across Australia to use a phone while driving to text, take photos or videos, check social media or use the screen in any way while you’re on the road operating a vehicle, motorbike or bicycle. It is also illegal to use a phone when your vehicle or bicycle is stationary, for example if you are waiting at a red traffic light. If you need to use your phone, safely pull over and park your vehicle where you will not endanger yourself or other road users.

Using a mobile phone on the road can impair your ability to drive safely through distraction and increase the risk of an accident. It is important to always

  • Keep your eyes on the road!
  • Plan breaks in your trip if you need to check your phone - familarise yourself with your journey and make sure you are legally parked before checking your phone.
  • Avoid the temptation to multitask when you are riding - remember to accept orders and mark orders as complete when you are legally parked.
  • Keep your hands free so you can focus on the road - secure your device with a phone mount.
